Anthony Edwards has SNATCHED the torch from hands of Kevin Durant
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Unlike the history of the league, Anthony Edwards decided to snatch the torch instead of getting it passed on by his idol, Kevin Durant . With the first-round sweep in the playoffs, the star has taken over the title of face of the league a bit early.

After the first game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Phoenix Suns, Ant-Man described Kevin Durant as the ‘greatest to ever do it.’ After his statement, the series got more interesting as the fans started enjoying the two going head-to-head in the series.

Although ‘passing the torch’ is usually seen as a graceful and treasured moment in the NBA, ‘Ant-Man’ decided to go a different way and give his favorite player a tough time to claim it. The star did not give Durant a chance to take a breath in all four games.

From snatching the ball to dunking on Durant, Edwards has done everything without any hesitation. Unlike any other fan of his idol, he also made sure to let Durant hear about these dominating plays each time. Witnessing Ant-Man’s competitive spirit, KD also could not help but just smile at the youngster.

Anthony Edwards dominated Kevin Durant in the first-round sweep

The first playoff run for Edwards started on a high note as the T-Wolves dominated the Suns throughout the four games. Ant-Man was the leading scorer for two games as he outshined Durant’s almost solo race to the finish line.

Going head-to-head is something Edwards has done throughout the series. KD was almost unable to guard Edwards as he stole the ball and scored on the veteran on numerous occasions. Edwards also did not forget to celebrate his moves each time he shocked the NBA fans.

After trash-talking KD in the first game, Edwards did call the moment ‘one of the best feelings ever’ in his life. But Edwards was happy to send Durant home as he did not hesitate to dunk on the ex-MVP to close out the game. Ant-Man sweeping the Suns in the first round has made him one of the best young athletes in the NBA.

Anthony Edwards has stood out among the young stars

During this season, the veterans of the game, such as Kevin Durant, LeBron James , and Stephen Curry all have struggled to stay in the competition. However, young players like Luka Doncic , Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Edwards have led their teams to the playoffs.

Doncic and SGA both are also in the race for this year’s Most Valuable Player award. But both are yet to win the first round. The pair also had strong support to reach the postseason from their teammates, such as Kyrie Irving for Doncic and the Chet Holmgren and Josh Giddey squad for SGA. For Edwards, the star survived the regular season on his own as Towns returned as the playoffs were about to start.

Statistically, Ant-Man also averages more points than the two MVP candidates. To add to all of this, the star also gave the organization their first sweep in a playoff series in history. As the NBA world expected Doncic and SGA to take over the postseason, Edwards has taken charge of getting recognized as the future of the NBA instead.

Anthony Edwards is on his way to become the face of the league

Ever since the beginning of his career, Edwards has been getting compared to the greats of the game. One of the most prominent names that come across is the NBA legend Michael Jordan. The Hall of Famer’s form, style of playing, and, more importantly, mentality show a high resemblance with the Minnesota guard.

Not just fans but even the veterans of the game have acknowledged the star’s bright future in the league. After Edwards’ monstrous dunk on John Collins , the Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce called the young athlete ‘face of the league.’

To add the final cherry on top, Edwards’ childhood hero, Kevin Durant, called the athlete ‘my favorite player to watch.’ After the 4-0 sweep in the first round, Durant gave Edwards his flowers by praising his growth in the past four years and his love for the game.

Durant, acknowledging Edwards’ improvement and wishing to watch him in the future, concludes that the star has passed the torch to Edwards. Or, more so, Edwards has snatched it from Durant by taking over the championship race. It is certainly exciting to witness the beginning of the Edwards era in the NBA.
